The damper on most houses in The Colony is a throat damper — a cast iron plate sitting just above the firebox, operated by a handle, and after thirty or forty years of heat cycling it does not seal. It warps, it collects soot on the seat, and it ends up a metal flap resting loosely over an open hole in your roof. The consequence is not dramatic and it is continuous: conditioned air leaving the house every hour of every day, all summer, through a fireplace nobody is using. It seals properly because it is a gasket rather than metal on metal, it keeps rain and animals out of the flue as a cap does, and it stops the year-round air loss the old damper cannot. It is a genuine upgrade rather than a like-for-like replacement, and on a house of this age it is often a better use of money than repairing the original.
