A large fireplace is harder to make work than a small one, and Southlake's estates in Timarron and Carillon are full of large fireplaces. The reason is geometry. A fireplace draws because hot gas rises in the flue and pulls air in behind it, and that only works if the opening, the throat, the smoke chamber and the flue are in proportion to one another. Enlarge the opening — which is what a dramatic custom firebox does — without enlarging everything downstream, and the fire produces more than the flue can take away. It spills. Owners are then told the chimney is dirty, which it is not, or that it needs relining, which will not help unless the sizing is corrected as part of it.
