There is a rule about how high a chimney has to be, it is simple enough to check from your own driveway, and it explains a surprising share of the smoking complaints across Las Colinas and Valley Ranch. A chimney must extend at least three feet above the point where it passes through the roof, and at least two feet higher than anything within ten feet of it. That last clause is the one that catches houses here: a chimney built correctly for its own roof, with a taller gable, a second-storey wall or a large tree standing within ten feet of it, sits inside the wind shadow of that structure. Wind striking the taller obstruction rolls down over the flue and pushes back into it, and the fireplace smokes on windy days and behaves perfectly on still ones.
