Between the firebox and the flue there is a space most homeowners have never heard of, and on the older brick around central Grand Prairie it is frequently the reason a fireplace draws badly. It is the smoke chamber — the tapering section above the damper that funnels smoke from a wide opening into a narrow flue. It is supposed to present a smooth, even slope. On a great many houses it was left as stepped corbelled brick with the mortar joints open, because it is invisible and finishing it properly took time. Those steps create turbulence that fights the draft, and the open joints give creosote somewhere to accumulate in the part of the chimney closest to the framing and hardest to clean. Parging it — coating the chamber with refractory mortar worked to a smooth slope — is a real repair with a measurable effect on how the fireplace behaves, and it is one of the least often offered because it cannot be seen from the room.
